The 30 kV station is operated by the FERROPOLIS Friends Society. Here, former miners maintain and present the history of the place. For the almost thirty years that it was in operation, the station was the electrical heart of the Golpa-Nord opencast mine. From here, the excavation machinery, the locomotives and every single light bulb were provided with electricity.
The Society now uses the spaces for exhibitions on the history of brown coal opencast mining in the region. In the former control centre, you can even say ‘I do’ with the City of Iron in the background. For example at the Melt! festival in 2010, a couple who had met each other at another Melt! two years earlier held their wedding here.
